DA vows to bag R1bn Sekunjalo tender papers

The DA has vowed to obtain documents submitted by Sekunjalo Investments, which led to it being awarded a R1 billion tender from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The award was a direct conflict of interest and made Sekunjalo both a player and a regulator in the fishing industry, the DA said. Politically connected Sekunjalo, which owns Premier Fishing, will be responsible for managing South Africa’s fishing patrol fleet, which conducts research, inspections of fishing trawlers and anti-poaching patrols. The DA said it would submit an application under the Promotion of Access to Information Act. The award came in light of the fact that Sekunjalo had links to cabinet members and its chairman, Iqbal Survé, regularly accompanied President Jacob Zuma on overseas state visits, the Sunday Times reported yesterday. “The South African people have a right to know that their money is being spent responsibly,” DA spokesman for agriculture, forestry and fisheries Deetlefs du Toit said in a statement.
